DONATION AND MEMBERSHIP FEES Why donate to help the people of Meta! In a recent report titled “THE HIV/AIDS CRISES, NORTH WEST (NWP) AT A GLANCE”, World Bank statistics show villages in NWP having an HIV/AIDS infection rate from low 11% to high 22% among different sub groups. In 2004, the Government of Cameroon used World Bank HIV/AIDS medical recommendations to provide care for some regions of North West Province but, HIV/AIDS appears to be on the rise. Dr Mayer Magdalene, the North West Province Coordinator for HIV/AIDS indicated that she couldn’t explain if the measures put in place since 2004 were working or not because there were no baseline surveys before launching the new programs. She admitted that cultural resistance, limited resources and overcrowding at the Bamenda Central Hospital treatment center were problematic. But there is more that appears to be blocking so many from getting medical help. Poverty and no means to reach treatment centers are some causes.
Consider a patient who leaves some 35 kilometers away from Bamenda Central Hospital treatment center walking over hills, forest, rocks to catch a motorcycle, known in that part of the world as 'Bendskin' to reach the treatment center. There are no guarantees that the patient will receive medications due to lack of funds. Dr Mayer Magdalene and her staff review the cases of most patients and select the critically ill to provide anti-retroviral drugs at government subsidized rates. World Bank statistics for the number of orphans is 9170 for Momo Division, the second highest of all the Divisions in North West Province of Cameroon. Infant mortality rate is soaring. The number of young people dying from diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, and TB is soaring.
The system of helping the indigenes to combat diseases such as malaria, typhoid, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and cardiovascular diseases is broken given current rate of new HIV/AIDS infection and death rate. A hospital such as Presbyterian General Hospital Acha-Tugi, with 54 buildings, constructed by the Swiss and managed by missionaries has been abandoned. Local medical staffs sterilize disposable used gloves, syringes, and IV bags to be reused on other patients. Glucose and meds are in short supply. Equipment dates back to 1964, when the hospital was constructed. Most are no longer working. About 50 yards from the hospital's consulting rooms, teenagers carry expired aspirins, capsules of unknown powder, which they call antibiotics in baskets on their heads as pharmacy stores. Patients with little or no money purchase the capsules of expired medications. The capsules and expired medications end the lives of most patients or cause other complications. I stood by one of the teenagers, gauzing at the doors of the consulting rooms and wondering why patients would walk miles only to return with expired medications from the teenagers instead of paying the 1500FCFA ($3) for consultation at the hospital! With the leadership of world medical professional volunteers from Harvard Medical International, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, American Medical Resources Foundation, Family Van and other medical experts in Cameroon, we teamed to develop medical solutions for the region. We provided medical equipment and supplies but the difference was short lived.
MH-GH, Inc. - a US based Public Charity has decided to assist the Meta population of about 200,000 people. The strategy is to reduce the HIV/AIDS infections of new cases to less than 1% and below in 2-3 years. We start with outreach primary and preventive care. We will provide infant care education, prenatal care, pediatrics services, screening, home care, follow-ups. In addition, we would provide medical care to the many orphans. Based on statistics we face same problems every year. MH-GC, Inc. and PATH System has decided to include microfinance for poverty reduction. Since poverty and diseases are linked, increasing household incomes will increase the quality of health.
Your support in creating and sustaining healthcare in Meta will help tremendously. Path System is current accepting donation and membership fees. If you are located in the United States and in other locations except Cameroon, you can deposit funds directly into PATH SYSTEM account.
